Sunday Night Cruisin’ @ Pony Corral and Portage Avenue

Decent temperatures and no rain last night added up to a great night of cruising in Winnipeg yesterday.  Unlike last weekend, there was a great turnout at the Pony Corral, including this ’60 Chevy Biscane panel van, and the Mustang Mach I Fastback below.

One of the most intriguing cars at the show was this 1949 VW Beetle split-window.  The car was originally purchased in the Netherlands and later brought to the states while the son’s owner was working there.  Unfortunately for the son, he had to leave it behind when he returned to the land of wooden shoes.  The split-window languished in a Michigan airplane hangar until the present owner, David, brought it to Canada.

The car had lots of weird and wonderful features on it, such as a “rear-facing foglight” added to comply with Dutch safety regulations in the 50’s.  Reflectors were also added, although the only brakelight still doubles as a license plate light.  If that’s not enough, check out the crazy pop-out turn signals–they actually pop out of the door pillars when you turn them on.

The action was just as busy on Portage Avenue, where Mario was playing with his favourite toy:  a ’64 Impala SS lowrider.  Mario’s whip not only has a full airbag suspension, it has a $10,000 paint job with more metal flake than a Costco size box of stainless-steel breakfast cereal.  He was grinning like a toddler on his tricycle after doing some 3-wheeled laps around the parking lot.  I’ve gotta give Mario props–he was the only person at this impromptu show who was really showing off his lowrider’s bouncing skills.

This guy deserves props, too, for doing what GM didn’t have the good sense to do: build a Chevy Impala SS Wagon.  This wicked wagon had the original engine replaced with a 350 crate motor to back up the billet wheels, Hurst shifter, and new-school “SS” logo embroidered on the headrests inside.

Finally, have a good look at the artwork on this little Dodge R/T.  Although more and more airbrushed cars are rockin’ the dragon theme, this yellow machine went for an original fire-breathing monster tearing its way out of the hood.

That’s it for today, but don’t forget to come back for the car calendar on Wednesday.  Wednesday will also be the first City Lights Cruise Night at the Pony Corral’s downtown location, 444 St. Mary, followed by the first Pony Corral boat show on Thursday at their Pembina Highway location.
