Thursday Night Boat Show @ Pony Corral Pier 7

Since we’re finally seeing some actual summer weather here in the ‘peg, I headed down to the Pony Corral Pier 7 Boat Show for their “watered-down” cruise night (pun intended).

The weather gods must have wanted the show to go off without a hitch;  the morning’s cloudy skies turned blue late in the afternoon.  However, just as things were wrapping up, the clouds came back with a vengeance.  Twenty minutes after this photo was taken, a typical Red River Valley downpour chased me back to the car.

Winnipeg Water Sports brought out a couple of their Malibu Wake Setter boats for demonstration.  This one has a 340-hp “Monsoon” engine, built by Indmar Marine Engines.  Based off a Chevy 350, the powerplant features a fly-by-wire electronic fuel delivery system, developed specifically for this boat.  Best of all, it was certified 4-Stars Super-Low Emission by the California Air Resources Board in 2007–so you won’t destroy the environment while you’re trying to enjoy it.

This particular boat is listed on the Winnipeg Water Sports website as having the usual bow rider goodies such as a Sony 6-disc CD player and halogen docking lights.  It’s also equipped with some not-so-usual accessories, like 4 separate ballast tanks and a hot water shower.

Local wakeboarder Jason Bannatyne was on hand for a quick demonstration of what the Malibu boats can do.  Jason isn’t just a random kid that happened to be there–he won in his class at Wakestock last year, and he qualified for the 2008 pro tour.  On top of that, he’s also a regular contributor to SBC magazine.  Not bad for a kid from Manitoba!

That’s it for this week, but don’t forget to come back Monday for coverage of this weekend’s car shows and cruise nights.  If things go as planned, I’ll actually be handing out some of the “awards” that have been mentioned over the last few months on this site–like, the award for “best use of attitude in a hood ornament.”  Or last Monday’s special award for “So 50’s, it makes a Wurlitzer Jukebox get jealous.”  If you’ve earned one of these “prestigious” prizes, keep an eye out for me at a show this weekend.  See ya then!
