Manitoba Car Happenings: First week of July 2008

Cruise night at the old Pony Corral

This Week:

Cruise nights abound in Manitoba next week. Click Here for a full list of the weekly cruise nights in Brandon and Winnipeg, on Wednesday and Sunday nights.

Brandon is having an extra cruise night Tomorrow, (Thursday, July 3rd). The Brandon Area Car Enthusiast (BACE), A&W, and the Bank of Montreal are blocking off Rosser Avenue from 6 to 10 pm, welcoming all kinds of cool vehicles to cruise on down and show off their stuff.

Just south of Winnipeg, Red River Co-op Speedway is hosting 4-cylinder stock cars on Thursday, July 3rd. The green flag drops at 7:30, with the rain date set for Friday, July 4th.

Dominion City, MB, is hosting the Kustom Klassics Summerfest Show & Shine. There’s a parade at 10:30, followed by a show at the ball diamonds from 12:30 to 3:30 pm. Rain or shine, it’s open to all makes and models of special interest vehicles. There’s refreshments and BBQ on site, as well as a swimming pool to cool off from the July heat. For more info, call Russ at (204) 388-6258, John at (204) 233-0115, or Trevor at (204) 422-6145.

Winnipeg Sports Car Club is hosting Race Weekend #3 at Gimli Motorsports Park, this July 5th and 6th. Registration and breakfast goes from 8:30 to 10 on Saturday and Sunday, with events going all day. For more info, check out their website.

All Roads Lead To Falcon Show & Shine, or so say the organizers of the show & shine at Falcon Lake, MB, on Sunday, July 6th. Registration is from 10 am to noon, at only $10 per car. There’s not only a great car show, there’s a great beach, Wonder Shows Midway, golf, and tennis. All proceeds go to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Homemade Hybrid

See that Honda generator tied down to the back of his mobility scooter? This guy has trouble just getting around, yet he’s got what every major car maker can’t build–a functional heavy-hybrid vehicle. It plugs in at night for taking short trips without using gas, it’s a convertible, and it has two cupholders per occupant. Come on Detroit, are you going to let a regular Joe beat you at car design?

Next Week:

Red River Co-op Speedway is hosting the NOSA Mid Canada Sprint Challenge, on Thursday, July 10th. The green flag drops at 7:30 sharp. More info can be found at their website.

South Beach Casino presents their bi-weekly “Simply Irresistible Cruise Night” on Saturday, July 12th. It’s just like the weekly Sunday and Wednesday cruise nights in the big cities of Winnipeg and Brandon, but located at the South Beach Casino, 1/2 an hour north of Winnipeg on highway 59. Participants can enter inside the casino for a $1,000 cash draw to be made at the end of summer. For more info, check out their website or contact Jim Robinson (204-766-2100 ext. 2007, or rodder39-at-mts.net) Tick Rowson (204-766-2100 ext. 2007, or tick-at-southbeachcasino.ca) or Mark Robinson (204-766-2100 ext. 2104, or mrobinson@southbeachcasino.ca).

Cruise nights too quiet for ya? Head down to Gimli Dragways on July 12th and 13th. Test & Tune starts at 10 am on Saturday the 12th, and bracket racing starts at 10 am on Sunday the 13th. For more info, check out their website.

Speaking of Gimli, “Cruizin’ Gimli Beach #6” is on Sunday, July 13th. The cruise starts at 9 am at the Matlock Recreational Centre, in Matlock, MB. Fork over $5 to the RM of Gimli Fire Dept. Jaws of Life fund, sign up for the poker derby, and get your complimentary pancake breakfast before hitting the road. From there, it’s a 25 km lakefront cruise to downtown Gimli, where live entertainment will be waiting. Don’t forget to tune your radio dial to 101.7 FM for live updates and great music while you’re cruisin’.

That’s it for this week, but don’t forget to come back Friday for more great cars and great pics!

Canada Day Fireworks

These were some of the Canada Day fireworks at the Forks last night, from the great show put on by Archangel Fireworks here in Winnipeg. I might be a day late saying it, but Happy 141st birthday, Canada!
